Coast Guard opens fire on boat smuggling 25 Chinese nationals near Florida after it refused to stop

In a dramatic display of maritime enforcement, the U.S. Coast Guard recently took decisive action against a vessel attempting to smuggle 25 individuals from China into the United States near the Florida coast. According to reports from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the incident occurred approximately one mile south of Key Biscayne on June 10. The boat did not heed initial commands from Coast Guard personnel to halt, prompting the deployment of warning shots. When these measures failed to achieve compliance, the Coast Guard resorted to firing a disabling shot to stop the vessel. Captain Jason Hagen, the southwest district chief of enforcement, had previously noted an increase in smuggling interdictions, attributing this trend to the shifting tactics of cartels seeking new avenues to circumvent stricter land border controls.
