These gifts, along with the poetry he recited at a going-away party, where he became emotional and tearful, were cited as part of the alleged misconduct. In his letter, Edwards claims that the Ethics Committee failed to consider evidence suggesting that his relationships with the women were mutual and had developed over many years prior to his congressional career. He asserts that one of the women referred to him as her “second dad,” and another witness described the dynamic as a father-daughter or mentor-mentee relationship. Additionally, Edwards points out that he extended similar gifts to both male and female employees, including a handgun to a male staffer, and that the two women occasionally returned gifts to him.
