China targets new space-based computing network to process data born in orbit

China has announced plans to develop a new space-based computing network called Xingshu, or 'Star Hub,' which aims to process satellite data directly in orbit using artificial intelligence before transmitting the results back to Earth. The system, being developed by Fudan University and Shanghai Xingshu Tiansuan Space Technology Co., is expected to include approximately 1,000 satellites. It will provide on-demand computing services for various sectors including energy, shipping, and finance, enabling users to rent computing power by the hour. Additional capabilities include combining satellite observations with AI to deliver weather forecasts, disaster alerts, port monitoring, power grid inspections, and remote sensing for emergency response and environmental management. This initiative follows other Chinese projects like the Tiansuan constellation and the Three-Body Computing Constellation.
