China fires up powerful particle accelerator to unlock secrets of atoms

China has activated the High Intensity Heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF), a cutting-edge particle accelerator capable of producing the most intense beams of charged atoms in the world. The facility, located in Huizhou, Guangdong province, cost 2.6 billion yuan (approximately US$384.1 million) to build and took 16 years of development by researchers at the Institute of Modern Physics in Lanzhou, Gansu. HIAF surpasses the previous world record set by a German facility in Darmstadt, with the ability to pack up to eight times more atoms into each pulse. The facility integrates a 100-meter linear accelerator, a 570-meter circular accelerator, and storage rings into a single system, enabling advanced research in creating new atomic nuclei and applications in cancer treatment and spacecraft materials.
