China draws up safety rules for autonomous vehicles

China has introduced new safety regulations for autonomous vehicles, effective July 1, 2027. These rules require autonomous systems to meet the safety standards of human drivers, include a mandatory deactivation override, and mandate transparency about system limitations to buyers. The regulations apply to both vehicles with human backup drivers and fully autonomous robotaxis like those developed by Waymo. They aim to prevent misuse and ensure safe interaction between humans and machines. The rules come amid safety concerns and following a fatal crash involving a Xiaomi vehicle in 2025. China supported the first global regulations for fully autonomous vehicles adopted by a UN agency in June.
