Fake squishy toys, popular among children worldwide, have raised concerns due to potential dangers linked to their production and composition. These toys, often shaped like dumplings, capybaras, or sea creatures, have become a global phenomenon, particularly among schoolchildren who enjoy their squishiness and visual appeal. However, reports indicate that some counterfeit versions of these toys may pose serious health risks. The U.S.-based Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently issued a warning regarding fake and counterfeit squishy toys that fail to meet safety standards. According to the CPSC, such toys may pose serious risks to children. If the internal fillings, often water beads, become ingested, they can lead to intestinal blockages or choking. Additionally, unknown filling materials may introduce chemical exposure, inhalation, or ingestion hazards. In extreme cases, heating the toys could result in chemical burns if the contents rupture. Similar concerns were raised in the United Kingdom, where fake squishies were found to contain toxic chemicals and elevated levels of benzene, a known carcinogen. A 2019 study conducted by Danish and Swedish environmental agencies identified common volatile organic compounds in squishy toys, including dimethylformamide, triethylenediamine, styrene, toluene, and cyclohexanone. These substances, while not necessarily harmful in small quantities, could pose long-term risks if continuously exposed. Dr. Ian Musgrave, a molecular pharmacologist at Adelaide University, explained that while the exact amounts of volatile compounds released by unregulated squishy toys remain unclear, the potential risks include eye and respiratory tract irritation, as well as possible damage to mucous membranes over time. He emphasized that Australian toys must adhere to strict regulations concerning volatile organic compound emissions and safety labeling. However, this compliance is not always enforced, especially with counterfeit products. Professor Oliver Jones, an expert in analytical chemistry at RMIT, noted that manufacturers of fake squishies may bypass these standards by using cheaper, potentially more hazardous chemicals. He pointed out that regulatory enforcement in many countries is limited, allowing substandard products to enter the market. Professor Frederic Leusch from Griffith University echoed this sentiment, stating that safer chemicals tend to be more expensive, leading some producers to opt for cost-effective alternatives, even if they carry greater health risks. In response to growing concerns, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) stated that it oversees mandatory product safety standards aimed at protecting consumers. The ACCC is working with both national and international regulators, as well as online platforms, to address the presence of harmful chemicals in children's toys, including squishies. However, Leusch highlighted a critical gap: chemical legislation in Australia depends heavily on importers to self-regulate, and there is insufficient oversight to ensure compliance. This lack of stringent enforcement raises questions about how children interact with these toys. While food safety regulations are rigorous, toy regulations often fail to account for the ways children might use them, such as chewing, tearing, or exposing them to heat. As the popularity of squishy toys continues, so too does the need for stronger safeguards to protect young users from potential harm.
