In response to extreme heat warnings issued under a Red Code alert, Romania's Ministry of Energy has initiated emergency measures aimed at ensuring the stability of the national power grid. At the heart of these efforts is Transelectrica SA, the National Electricity Transmission Company, which has taken decisive action to bolster the country’s energy infrastructure during this period of heightened demand. The company has canceled scheduled retirements of certain installations, allowing the transmission network to operate at maximum capacity and minimizing additional risks associated with extreme weather conditions.
The decision comes amid rising temperatures and increased electricity consumption, particularly during peak evening hours on Monday and Tuesday. According to forecasts prepared by the National Dispatcher, the maximum electricity consumption could reach approximately 8,000 megawatts (MW). This surge in demand is driven by both the use of air conditioning units and other cooling devices, as well as general household and industrial usage during the sweltering days. To manage this anticipated increase, Transelectrica has implemented a series of preventive measures designed to ensure the safe and continuous operation of the National Power System throughout the duration of the heatwave.
An Emergency Command was established at the headquarters of the National Dispatcher, convened at the initiative of the Ministry of Energy. The meeting brought together all relevant entities within the National Electrical System (SEN), including representatives from production companies, distribution operators, and regulatory bodies. Led by Cristian Bușoi, the State Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, the session focused on analyzing projections regarding electricity consumption trends, the availability of production capacities, and the current state of the High Voltage Transmission Network. Discussions centered around operational measures necessary to maintain system reliability and prevent potential disruptions.
To address the challenges posed by the extreme weather conditions, the National Dispatcher has intensified monitoring and intervention protocols across the High Voltage Transmission Network. These measures aim to detect and respond promptly to any incidents without compromising consumer supply. Throughout the entire duration of the meteorological warning, operational teams from Transelectrica, working through the National Dispatcher and technical personnel at regional branches, continuously monitor the status of the National Electrical System and the High Voltage Transmission Network. They remain ready to intervene immediately should the situation require it.
In addition to the existing infrastructure, new investments have been made to enhance the resilience of the electrical system. Approximately 1,500 MW of new generation and storage capacity have been activated since the beginning of the year, with about 1,000 MW added just in the last month. Further, another 1,000 MW from photovoltaic plants, wind farms, and storage facilities are being prepared for connection to the grid. These additions are intended to improve the flexibility and robustness of the National Electrical System, especially during periods when energy consumption is under pressure due to extreme temperatures and high usage of cooling equipment.
As the heatwave continues, authorities are closely watching the evolving situation and preparing for possible adjustments to their strategies. The focus remains on maintaining a balance between electricity production and consumption while ensuring uninterrupted service for consumers. With the implementation of these proactive steps, the goal is to mitigate any potential risks and safeguard the stability of Romania’s power supply during this critical time.

AdevărulIndependentCenter4 days ago Crisis cell requested by the Ministry of Energy against the backdrop of the red code of extreme temperatures.

Digi24IndependentCenter4 days ago Transelectrica is preparing the grid for full capacity against the backdrop of the heatwave.

Digi24IndependentCenter5 days ago Raed Arafat, avertisment de ultimă oră în plin cod roșu de caniculăRaed Arafat, head of Romania's National Emergency Dispatch Center (DSU), addressed the public during an extreme heatwave warning, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures to protect vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with heart conditions. Authorities have activated emergency committees, established support points, and prepared spaces for people to seek shelter and receive medical assistance. Arafat urged citizens to avoid sun exposure between 11 AM and 6 PM, wear light clothing, stay hydrated, and check on isolated neighbors. He also highlighted the readiness of emergency services like SMURD and ambulance teams, which operate under unified coordination, and warned against swimming in unauthorized areas due to risks like whirlpools. The heatwave is expected to spread across most of the country, requiring additional mobilization by authorities.
