CDU plays constitutional protection: Professor feels pressured because of leftist posts

A professor at the University of Vechta has found himself at the center of controversy after being criticized by a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Lower Saxony over his social media posts. The incident involves Marco Rieckmann, a university lecturer specializing in higher education and environmental science, who has been accused by CDU politician Dirk Toepffer of expressing views that question democratic principles and the rule of law. Toepffer, a former chair of the CDU faction in the Lower Saxony state parliament, sent Rieckmann an email on July 7, stating that he had become aware of Rieckmann's Instagram activity through students at the University of Vechta. In the message, Toepffer expressed concerns about Rieckmann’s posts, suggesting they raised doubts about his commitment to democracy and the legal framework underpinning it. He also indicated that he intended to use two specific posts as part of his parliamentary work. One of these posts included a quote from a taz commentary titled “Macht kaputt, was euch die Zukunft nimmt,” which calls for dismantling systems that threaten the future. Another post featured content from a user known as “Knallbunte Rose” discussing protests against an AfD party conference in Erfurt, where the text contrasted armed extremists with citizens opposing fascism. Rieckmann responded to Toepffer’s criticism on Instagram, clarifying his political stance as anti-fascist, green, and left-leaning. He emphasized his public support for democracy, human rights, and sustainability, arguing that critiques of the economic system should not be equated with hostility toward democracy. As a scientist, he stated that taking a stand was not only permissible but necessary, and he refused to be silenced. He described feeling surprised by Toepffer’s letter, particularly because none of his students had previously commented on his posts. The professor viewed Toepffer’s communication as an attack, comparing it to the tactics used by AfD-linked platforms that encourage students to report teachers perceived as insufficiently neutral.
