CDU Saxony-Anhalt before the reorganization

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Saxony-Anhalt has announced plans for a leadership reshuffle following its historic defeat in the regional election. The party's current minister-president and interim state chairman, Sven Schulze, confirmed that the state executive committee would resign collectively and new elections for the leadership would take place by the end of December. This decision comes after the CDU secured just 17.2 percent of the vote, down from 37.1 percent in the previous election in 2021. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) emerged victorious with 43.8 percent of the votes. During a meeting of the state executive committee in Magdeburg, Schulze stated that the CDU had lost its mandate to govern and now operates in opposition. He emphasized that the responsibility for government lies with the AfD. Schulze also indicated that he would not seek re-election as head of the state committee during the upcoming special party congress scheduled for November or December. Meanwhile, Sepp Müller, a member of parliament and deputy leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, announced his candidacy for the position of state chairman. Müller, aged 37, made this declaration after the meeting of the state executive committee in Magdeburg. He described himself as a candidate for the role of state chairman. Müller previously served as the CDU's top candidate in the regional election, though his performance drew criticism within the party. Before announcing his candidacy, Müller had sparked controversy by suggesting that if the polling results translated into actual election outcomes, the AfD's leading candidate, Ulrich Siegmund, would have a mandate to form a government. This statement reportedly upset Kanzler Friedrich Merz, who publicly criticized Müller without naming him directly. Merz pointed out that it was incomprehensible that a deputy parliamentary group leader could undermine the party's leading candidate shortly before the election. Müller responded to the criticism, stating that he did not agree with Merz’s comments and noted that the majority of the state party supported his stance. He has been a member of parliament since 2017 and holds a direct mandate from the Dessau-Wittenberg electoral district. He married CSU MP Wolfgang Stefinger and has a son. The CDU in Saxony-Anhalt faces challenges in rebuilding its political standing after the election loss. The party's former leadership, including Schulze and General Secretary Mario Kaschunke, will step down, paving the way for new leadership. The outcome of the special party congress will determine the future direction of the CDU in the region. The party is currently exploring potential alliances, including with the BSW, to address the political vacuum left by its defeat.
