Can Southeast Asian artists replicate K-pop’s global success with SEA-pop?

Southeast Asian artists are gaining traction on the global stage, challenging the dominance of K-pop and Western pop in the music industry. This shift is evident in the growing popularity of regional acts such as the Filipino boy band SB19 and the girl group BINI, whose performances have drawn massive crowds and generated substantial fan engagement. In early August, fans gathered at a pop-up store in Tokyo's Shibuya district, which was set up to sell exclusive merchandise for SB19. The store, initially planned for a shorter duration, extended its operation for an extra five days due to high demand. During their recent tour in Japan, SB19 interacted with fans in Yokohama and performed in Tokyo and Osaka at the Summer Sonic festival. Meanwhile, BINI, another prominent Philippine act, made its debut at the same event. SB19's rise to prominence continued with a notable performance at the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago in July, marking their first appearance at the prestigious music event. Earlier in April, the band held a sold-out home concert in Paranaque, attracting nearly 100,000 attendees from around the world, including fans from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, and Germany. BINI also achieved historic recognition in April when they debuted at the Coachella festival in California, further solidifying their status as leading figures in the region's music scene. These achievements are part of a broader trend indicating that Southeast Asian artists are increasingly surpassing Western and Korean counterparts in terms of streaming chart performance. According to data from the French music analytics platform Soundcharts, the proportion of Indonesian artists featured in Spotify's weekly top 10 list within Indonesia rose dramatically from 39 percent to 97 percent between 2021 and the first half of 2026. Similar patterns were observed in the Philippines and Thailand, where the share of local artists increased from 31 percent to 81 percent and 71 percent to 76 percent, respectively, over the same timeframe. An independent data analyst based in Japan, known as Tsurezure Lab, has been tracking weekly aggregations of Spotify's daily Top 50 charts in Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore since February 2023. Their analysis highlights a consistent pattern of strong regional support, driven by shared linguistic and cultural backgrounds among listeners. This suggests that Southeast Asian audiences are not only consuming more music from their own region but are also actively supporting it through streaming activity and live attendance. The increasing visibility of Southeast Asian artists on international stages reflects a growing confidence and investment in the region's creative industries. As these acts continue to expand their reach, they are likely to influence the global music landscape further, potentially reshaping the dynamics of the industry. With ongoing performances and new releases, the momentum for SEA-pop appears to be building steadily, offering a compelling alternative to traditional global pop powerhouses.
