Cabinet okays 5-year NIS 360 million plan for Eilat’s economy, infrastructure

Israel has officially approved a comprehensive five-year development plan aimed at transforming Eilat into a major economic and tourism hub in the southern part of the country. The plan, which was endorsed by the government and involves collaboration between approximately 20 government ministries, carries a total budget of NIS 360 million (approximately USD 120 million). This initiative reflects a broader effort to elevate Eilat's role within national priorities while addressing critical challenges related to infrastructure, healthcare, and regional stability.

The approval of the plan came after extensive discussions and planning led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who described Eilat and the surrounding Hevel Eilot Regional Council as the "southern pearl of the State of Israel." In a statement released alongside the announcement, Netanyahu emphasized the resilience of the local population during recent conflicts, particularly referencing the hospitality extended to evacuees from Gaza and northern regions affected by rocket attacks. He framed the plan as a continuation of efforts to bolster the region's capabilities and ensure long-term prosperity.

Eilat Mayor Eli Lankri welcomed the decision, expressing gratitude for placing the city at a "satisfactory" position on the national agenda. He highlighted the significance of the plan, noting that the involvement of multiple ministries and the substantial financial commitment underscore the city's strategic importance to Israel's future. Lankri stressed that a thriving Eilat would not only benefit its residents but also serve as a vital national interest.

A central focus of the plan is the enhancement of healthcare services in the region. The Health Ministry has already taken steps to upgrade Yoseftal Medical Center and expand access to medical care throughout Eilat and the Eilot area. A significant portion of the budget—NIS 82.5 million (approximately USD 27.4 million)—is allocated to this goal. This includes initiatives such as training programs for healthcare and psychological professionals, incentives to attract students to these disciplines, and measures to retain talent in the region. Additionally, NIS 30 million (about USD 10 million) will fund the travel and accommodation expenses for specialized therapists treating children with autism, ensuring they can provide essential services to the community.

The plan also includes provisions for maintaining a civilian helicopter service in Eilat, which will improve medical evacuation options for patients requiring urgent care. This investment underscores the government's commitment to enhancing emergency response capabilities in one of the country's most vulnerable regions. Health Minister Haim Katz praised the decision, calling it a continuation of efforts to fortify the healthcare system in the south.

Infrastructure improvements are another key element of the plan. Efforts will be made to modernize public transportation systems, including the development of Ramon Airport, which is crucial for both domestic and international connectivity. Upgrades to the region's transport network aim to facilitate easier movement of goods and people, thereby supporting economic growth and tourism activities.

Tourism and education are also slated for expansion. The plan includes investments in tertiary educational institutions to foster innovation and create job opportunities. These developments are intended to make Eilat more attractive to visitors and investors alike, reinforcing its status as a premier destination in southern Israel.
