Buni builds, reconstructs Yobe schools

Yobe State has made significant strides in revitalizing its education system through a series of large-scale infrastructure projects and policy initiatives. According to recent disclosures by the Yobe State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the government has constructed 929 new classrooms and reconstructed 301 schools throughout the state. These efforts aim to bridge critical infrastructural gaps and ensure better learning environments for students. The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen the education sector and increase access to quality education for all citizens.

In addition to classroom construction and reconstruction, the Yobe State Government, under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni, has taken specific measures to promote gender equity in education. Ten new Government Girls' Senior Secondary Schools have been established to address the issue of declining female enrollment beyond junior secondary level. This move seeks to improve retention and completion rates among girls, ensuring they continue their studies into higher levels of education. The ministry emphasized that these schools are crucial in encouraging more young women to pursue academic careers and contribute meaningfully to society.

To support this educational expansion, the government has undertaken several ancillary projects. A total of 748 classrooms have been renovated to enhance the overall learning experience. Moreover, 125 staff quarters have been built, primarily in rural areas, to improve the living conditions of teachers and thereby encourage them to deliver more effective services. In tandem with these developments, the ministry has installed 275 toilet facilities and 47 solar-powered boreholes in schools, significantly improving sanitation and access to clean water for students.

Human resource development has also been prioritized in the state's education reforms. The administration has recruited 7,230 new teachers and trained 12,714 teaching personnel to enhance the quality of instruction and improve learning outcomes in public schools. These efforts are intended to create a more competent and motivated teaching workforce capable of meeting the evolving demands of the education sector.

Financial commitments to education are substantial, with the state allocating approximately N6 billion annually to its school feeding program. Additionally, around N3 billion is spent each year on paying examination fees for students taking tests such as WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, NBAIS, and BECE. The government also funds the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges scholarship scheme, which benefits 150 students annually at a cost exceeding N2.2 billion. To further alleviate overcrowding in existing schools, 14 Mega and Model Schools have been established in major towns, offering modern learning facilities and improved educational experiences.

These comprehensive interventions underscore the Yobe State Government's dedication to transforming the education landscape. By focusing on both infrastructure and human resources, the administration aims to create a conducive environment for learning and ensure equitable access to education for all residents.
