Federal prosecutor's office: Suspected IS fighters arrested in Schleswig-Holstein

The Federal Prosecutor's Office in Germany has arrested two suspected members of the Islamic State (IS) in Schleswig-Holstein. The men are alleged to have joined the terrorist group in Iraq as early as 2014 and fought for them. One suspect is accused of serving as a commander in an IS combat unit and working for the Sharia police, while the other is said to have occupied an oil refinery owned by the Iraqi state in the northern city of Baiji. He is also charged with war crimes against property and distributing IS propaganda after entering Germany in July 2022. The arrests were made by officers of the Federal Criminal Police in the Stormarn district near Hamburg, and the men were placed under investigation and held in custody the same day.
