Bulk waste generators in A.P. told to set up on-site processing units

Bulk waste generators in Andhra Pradesh have been directed to establish on-site processing units to manage their waste more effectively, according to District Collector A. Siri during a visit to Kurnool on Saturday. The directive forms part of the state's broader 'Swarna Andhra-Swachh Andhra' initiative aimed at improving cleanliness and environmental sustainability. During her visit, Siri emphasized that scientific waste management could lead to a cleaner environment and urged businesses and commercial complexes to take responsibility for their waste generation. The announcement came after a joint visit by District Collector A. Siri and Municipal Commissioner Challa Obulesu to a local departmental store, where they highlighted the importance of adhering to the Solid Waste Management Rules-2026. These rules mandate that entities producing over 100 kg of solid waste per day, such as business complexes, hotels, shopping malls, function halls, and educational institutions, must register as 'Bulk Waste Generators.' This registration involves submitting details to the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) online portal, followed by verification by the municipal corporation, which provides specific guidelines for setting up waste processing units. Under the new regulations, these registered entities are encouraged to process their wet waste on-site using methods like composting, biomethanation, or other approved technologies. The goal is to minimize the amount of waste sent to landfills and promote sustainable practices. The Municipal Commissioner noted that this approach could drastically cut down on pollution and enhance urban cleanliness. He added that the government supports the establishment of these on-site processing systems to protect the environment and ensure long-term waste management solutions. In parallel developments, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu virtually inaugurated a State-wide initiative in Nandyal to convert dry solid waste facilities into 'Wealth Creation Centres' as part of the 'Swarna Andhra - Swachh Andhra' programme. The initiative was formally launched on Saturday, with Collector Rajakumari Ganiya and Dhone MLA Kotla Jayasurya Prakash Reddy participating in the ceremony. The event marked the opening of an Integrated Solid Waste Management Centre in Bethamcherla Nagar Panchayat, constructed at an estimated cost of ₹91 lakh. This newly established centre is designed to process both wet and dry solid waste, handling up to 10 tonnes of material daily. The facility includes a dedicated dry waste processing unit, which will contribute to reducing landfill dependency and fostering resource recovery. The project aligns with national and state-level goals to transition towards circular economy principles, where waste is minimized and resources are maximized. The push for on-site waste processing reflects growing concerns about the environmental impact of improper waste disposal and the need for localized solutions. As cities grapple with increasing volumes of waste, the emphasis on self-sufficiency in waste management is gaining traction.
