Humpback Hartwin: In the Baltic Sea, the next Timmy is on the move

In the Baltic Sea, another bottlenose whale has been spotted, showing signs similar to those of the recently deceased Timmy. The animal, named Hartwin, was sighted near the Kiel Inner Bay and is believed to be suffering from illness. Officials from the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Environment have confirmed the sighting and have set up a reporting system to track further appearances of the whale. Hartwin, who was given his name by conservationists with the organization “Stranded No More,” has been observed moving slowly through German waters since early July. First spotted in mid-June, he has been followed by volunteers who monitor his movements. On their Facebook page, they wrote: “Once whales dive too deep into the Baltic Sea, they can never return alive on their own.” This statement reflects concerns over the health and survival chances of the animal. Experts in marine biology, including Dr. Boris Culik, have noted similarities between Hartwin's condition and that of Timmy. Both show skin injuries, with Hartwin displaying white patches instead of the typical dark gray coloration and pink spots on his dorsal fin. These symptoms suggest a fungal infection. Dr. Culik believes the situation for Hartwin is dire, though he did not specify the exact prognosis. Heiko Buch-Illing, a whale expert, expressed similar concerns during an interview on June 30. He stated that there is little chance of survival for Hartwin, predicting either stranding or drowning within weeks. Buch-Illing also hoped that Hartwin would not strand in Germany, fearing a fate similar to that of Timmy. Timmy, whose death sparked widespread public interest, was stranded in the Baltic Sea and later transported by barge to the North Sea, where he was released. However, this attempt to save him reportedly caused additional harm due to his already weakened state. The rescue effort was privately funded and organized. Weeks after Timmy's release, his body washed ashore near the island of Anholt, where it was identified as his remains. Post-mortem examination could not determine the cause of death, although experts believe he likely drowned shortly after being released. The story of Timmy has had broader implications beyond just the immediate tragedy. A theater group in Hamburg has turned the incident into a play, highlighting the emotional impact of the event. Additionally, a Danish company has used parts of Timmy’s body for practical purposes, converting his blubber into biodiesel and some bones for a museum display. There were also reports suggesting that a political figure had prior knowledge of the findings from Timmy’s autopsy, which revealed unexpected results. The ongoing sightings and concerns surrounding Hartwin reflect a growing awareness of the challenges faced by these marine mammals in the Baltic Sea. Conservation efforts continue to focus on monitoring and understanding the factors contributing to the decline of such species.
