Brussels against the 'endless shuffling of contents'

The European Commission has accused Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram, of failing to limit risks posed by its platforms to users, particularly children and vulnerable adults, due to features designed to keep users engaged. The commission highlighted concerns over infinite scrolling between content, highly personalized news feeds, and automatic video playback. In its first assessment released today, the EU outlined requirements for Meta to change the design of both platforms, including disabling auto-play, introducing effective screen breaks, and adjusting recommendation systems. The EU emphasized that protecting the physical and mental health of Europeans must be a priority for social media platforms. Meta does not agree with the findings but plans to continue constructive cooperation with the EU. If the findings are confirmed, the EU could impose fines of up to six percent of Meta’s global annual revenue. Similar changes were previously proposed for TikTok.

The EU is asking Mete to change Facebook and Instagram

The end of Facebook and Instagram as we know them: EU calls for big changes

The European Commission has accused Meta of violating EU rules by allowing features on Facebook and Instagram that contribute to user addiction, particularly among children and vulnerable adults. The commission claims that functions such as infinite scrolling, autoplay video, and highly personalized content recommendations create harmful engagement patterns. As a result, Meta faces potential fines of up to six percent of its global annual revenue if it fails to implement changes. Proposed reforms include disabling autoplay, introducing effective screen time breaks, and adjusting recommendation algorithms. The EU argues that protecting users' physical and mental health should be a priority for social media platforms. Meta has not agreed with the findings but has committed to continuing constructive dialogue with the European Union.

Bias read (Center): The article presents the European Commission’s allegations against Meta as a factual report, without overtly endorsing or criticizing either side. It provides both the EU’s concerns and Meta’s stance without taking a clear ideological position. While the issue of digital platform regulation is a hot
