'Bright' woman, 22, died after nurse failed to carry out checks as ordered then lied

A 22-year-old woman named Amy Barber died after a nurse failed to perform required checks on her at a psychiatric ward. Amy had been diagnosed with emotionally unstable personality disorder and an eating disorder since age 14. On June 30, 2022, nurse Laurence Tchapong was responsible for checking on Amy every five minutes but handed her a towel at 8:15 PM and left. Another nurse, Victoria Connelly, discovered Amy unresponsive at 8:40 PM and called for help. Amy was taken to a hospital but died three days later from severe brain injuries, with authorities stating she took her own life. CCTV footage contradicted Tchapong’s claims that she had checked on Amy, showing she did not. Tchapong was found guilty of wilfully neglecting Amy at Liverpool Crown Court and is set to face sentencing. Amy’s mother expressed grief over her daughter’s death.

Bias read (Progressive): The article frames the incident as a systemic failure within healthcare, emphasizing negligence and accountability. It highlights the discrepancy between the nurse's reported actions and the evidence from CCTV, suggesting institutional oversight and potential policy failures. While not overtly polem
