Brazil: Leftists Try to Imprison Jair Bolsonaro Again over Handwritten Letter

Brazilian leftist Congressman Lindbergh Farias filed a formal request with the Supreme Federal Tribunal (STF) on Sunday to revoke the house arrest privileges granted to former President Jair Bolsonaro, citing a recent act he claims violates the legal restrictions placed on the ex-president. The move comes amid ongoing tensions between Bolsonaro's family and the left-leaning government led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. According to Farias, the alleged breach occurred when Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, Jair Bolsonaro’s son and a presidential candidate running against Lula in the October 2026 election, aired a handwritten letter written by his father during a livestream. The letter, which calls for unity behind Flávio’s candidacy, was shared publicly on social media along with a photo and transcript. Farias argues that this action contravened the STF’s order prohibiting Bolsonaro from using social media or engaging with the press. Jair Bolsonaro, currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for “crimes against democracy,” was convicted by the STF for allegedly conspiring to overturn the 2022 presidential election results. The election, which saw Lula narrowly defeat Bolsonaro, was marked by widespread censorship of the opposition campaign. Since March, Bolsonaro has been under house arrest in Brasília due to severe health issues, including a bout of bacterial pneumonia that required hospitalization in intensive care.
