Bohinj’s mountain rescuers responded to two separate incidents involving three Italian hikers and a paraglider who encountered a wolf pack during their trek through the Triglavski Pogorelec region. The events unfolded over one day, with both cases ending successfully thanks to timely intervention and the natural terrain offering some protection. The first incident occurred during a paragliding flight from Soriške Planine toward Italy's Gemoni. The pilot had planned a 106-kilometer circular route but was forced into severe turbulence near Vrh Dlani and Voglo, close to the Vratca pass. Due to the turbulence, the parachute closed unexpectedly, causing the pilot to crash onto the slope. According to the mountain rescue service in Bohinj, the accident could have been far worse, but the pilot survived due to the cushioning effect of the ruins and tall grass. He sustained an injury to his arm but was otherwise unharmed. Meanwhile, three young Italian hikers were hiking along a four-day tour through the Triglavski Pogorelec area. Their intended route took them from Planina Blato via Planina Laz, Lazovska and Mišeljska passes towards Vodnikovo Dom. However, they were surprised by an unexpected encounter with a group of wolves. As described by the rescuers, the animals quickly retreated into the forest, but the hikers were so frightened that they refused to continue their journey. The mountain rescuers intervened, guiding them back to their starting point and advising them on a more suitable continuation of their hike for the following day. The encounter with the wolves highlights how rare such situations are, as wolves typically avoid human contact. The rescuers emphasized that while such encounters can be alarming, there is little cause for concern. They recommended remaining calm, slowly retreating in the direction from which one came, and speaking in a normal tone of voice. “Although the situation may seem frightening, remember that wolves generally fear humans more than we fear them,” the rescuers added. The second incident underscores the unpredictable nature of outdoor activities, particularly in remote mountainous regions. The three Italian hikers, despite being experienced, found themselves in a situation that required immediate assistance.
