Blue shark spotted swimming in popular British harbour in rare sighting

A blue shark was recently spotted near Weymouth Harbour on the south coast of England, an uncommon occurrence as these sharks typically reside farther offshore. The 4-foot-long shark was observed by artist Rob Young while walking along the harbor wall. Although blue sharks are native to British waters, they are rarely seen so close to shore or in busy harbors. Experts suggest the shark might have been hunting prey fish or could have been disoriented. Kico Iraola from the SeaLife Centre noted that blue sharks usually avoid busy areas, and reduced prey availability might lead some individuals to venture closer to shore. Hayley Roberts from the Dorset Wildlife Trust confirmed the identification and explained that blue sharks are commonly found in UK waters between May and October. Recent increases in blue shark sightings along the south coast may be linked to warmer seas and abundant prey. Blue sharks can grow up to 13 feet and are found globally, though attacks on humans are extremely rare.
