Researchers at Imperial College London have developed the first fully biodegradable balloon, known as 'Bioloon,' which decomposes completely within nine months. Created through a public-private partnership led by events entrepreneur Charlotte Melia and PhD student Juliana Cumming, the balloon aims to address the environmental concerns associated with traditional balloons, which are made from non-biodegradable materials. Traditional balloons pose significant ecological risks, particularly to marine life and birds, according to studies like the 2019 University of Tasmania research. The development of Bioloon uses natural latex sourced from rubber trees and involves a modified chemical process to achieve biodegradability while maintaining elasticity similar to conventional balloons.
