A significant environmental issue has emerged along the shore near Ægisíðu in Reykjavík's West District, where sewage overflow and untreated waste have been reported. According to recent reports, there has been a noticeable increase in pollution on the beach area, including sewage discharge, fecal matter, and human waste scattered across the sand and streets, extending beyond the immediate vicinity into public spaces. The situation has raised concerns among local residents, who have repeatedly brought these issues to light.

The problem became more pronounced after maintenance work was carried out at the wastewater treatment plant in Ánanastrup during late March and again around April 10th. During this period, regular operations at the facility were suspended, leading to the use of emergency overflow systems. These systems released untreated sewage directly into the surrounding environment, spreading several hundred meters away from the shoreline. This overflow occurred because the normal process of directing wastewater to the treatment plant was temporarily halted due to maintenance activities.

According to Silja Ingólfsdóttir, an information representative for Veitna, the company responsible for managing the wastewater system, they are aware of the current conditions and have deployed personnel to clean up the affected areas whenever reports come in. She emphasized that whenever there are complaints about anything on the shore, staff are sent immediately to address the issue. However, she noted that the primary concern is not the overflow itself but rather the improper disposal of waste by individuals.

Silja explained that the main issue arises when people dispose of inappropriate items such as diapers, toilet paper, and other non-biodegradable materials down the drains. These substances do not dissolve in water and can accumulate within the drainage system, potentially causing blockages. She highlighted that such blockages can lead to serious consequences, including damage to infrastructure and increased costs associated with clearing them. Additionally, she stressed the responsibility of property owners to maintain their premises and ensure that waste is disposed of correctly, both inside homes and in the surrounding streets.

Residents living near the affected area have expressed growing unease over the ongoing pollution. Reports indicate that the accumulation of waste has become a recurring issue, prompting frequent calls for action from local authorities. While Veitna has taken steps to mitigate the impact by sending cleaning crews to the site, the underlying problem of improper waste disposal remains unresolved.

Local officials and environmental groups have called for stricter enforcement of regulations regarding waste management. They argue that without consistent monitoring and penalties for violations, the cycle of pollution will continue. Some community members have also suggested that educational campaigns could help raise awareness about the importance of proper waste disposal practices.
