Rescuing an injured pedestrian from a steep slope in a challenging situation

On a stormy evening on a Saturday, a dramatic rescue operation unfolded near Hólmavatn in the Skagafirði region of Iceland. A woman was found injured after falling into a steep cliffside close to the water’s edge. The incident, which took place around 6 p.m., highlighted the challenging conditions faced by rescuers as they worked to extract the victim from a dangerous location.

The woman had fallen while walking along a narrow path near Hólmavatn, located in the Hegranesi area of Skagafirði. The exact location of the accident was initially unclear, but it was later confirmed to have occurred in a particularly steep and rocky terrain just west of the lake. Emergency services were quickly mobilized, including the Skagfirðingasveit rescue team based in Sauðárkrókur, the flight rescue team from Varmahlíð, and Grettir from Hofsósi. These teams arrived on-site alongside paramedics and police officers. After some time, the precise location of the accident site was identified, allowing for more effective coordination of the rescue efforts.

Conditions at the scene were extremely difficult, requiring rescuers to walk along the shoreline to reach the injured person. The terrain was described as dangerously steep and rugged, making access to the site both physically demanding and risky. In order to safely transport the woman, a lifeboat from the Skagfirðingasveit was deployed. Due to the unstable ground and the height of the cliffs, it was impossible to land directly at the accident site. As a result, the woman was carried down the cliffside using a stretcher and transported across the water via the lifeboat. This method allowed her to be moved to safety without further injury.

The operation involved approximately 20 individuals from three rescue teams, along with paramedics and the police. The use of the lifeboat proved crucial in this situation, as it enabled the safe transfer of the injured woman across the water. According to reports from the Landsbjörg Rescue Association, the first responders who arrived on the scene immediately recognized the severity of the situation and the need for immediate assistance from the Landhelgisgæsla (Land Helgi's Police Station). The rescue effort demonstrated the complexity and danger inherent in such operations, especially when dealing with remote and hazardous environments.

In addition to the main rescue mission, other incidents were also addressed during the same evening. Rescue teams from Biskupstungum and Árborg assisted stranded tourists who had become stuck in a nearby area known as Lambafelli, close to Háafoss. Meanwhile, rescue teams from Súlum, operating under the Hálendisvaktinni (Hálend Rescue Team) in Landmannalaug, responded to another call involving a pedestrian who had fallen into a ditch between Landmannalaug and Hrafntinnusker. The man, who had attempted to cross the road independently, became trapped and required assistance. He was eventually recovered by ambulance services.

These multiple incidents underscore the challenges faced by emergency responders in the region, where weather conditions can rapidly change and pose significant risks to both rescuers and victims.
