BIR wins PH digital initiative of the year award in Singapore

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) recently achieved a significant milestone by winning the Philippines Digital Initiative of the Year – Finance Award at the GovMedia Conference & Awards 2026, which took place on July 9 at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Center in Singapore. This accolade highlights the BIR's efforts in leveraging technology to enhance tax compliance and provide better access to tax-related information for citizens. The award-winning initiative is known as the 2026 BIR Interactive Digital Tax Calendar, an in-house developed digital platform designed to simplify the process of tax compliance for taxpayers. The GovMedia Conference & Awards is a prestigious event that celebrates outstanding government projects and initiatives across Asia, focusing on digital transformation, innovation, governance, sustainability, and citizen-centric public service. Each entry undergoes rigorous evaluation by a panel of industry experts who assess them based on criteria such as innovation, impact, and contributions to public-sector excellence. The BIR's achievement underscores the growing importance of digital solutions in governmental operations and reflects a broader trend toward enhancing public services through technological advancements. Commissioner Charlito Martin R. Mendoza, along with several high-ranking officials including Deputy Commissioner Ma. Rosario Charo G. Enriquez-Curiba, Public Information and Education Division Chief Meilin L. Hirang, and Director Marlon Fritz Broto of the Office of the Commissioner, accepted the award on behalf of the Bureau. During the ceremony, Commissioner Mendoza expressed gratitude towards the team members within the BIR who have been instrumental in developing these digital services and supporting taxpayers throughout the country. He emphasized that the success of the Interactive Digital Tax Calendar is a collective effort and acknowledged the dedication of all those working behind the scenes to ensure smooth operations and improved taxpayer experiences. The 2026 BIR Interactive Digital Tax Calendar was launched during the 2026 National Tax Campaign Kickoff. It represents a shift from traditional printed calendars to an interactive online resource, allowing taxpayers to easily access important tax deadlines, filing requirements, and compliance information in one centralized location. This transition aims to streamline processes for both taxpayers and the BIR, making tax compliance less burdensome while ensuring clarity and efficiency in interactions between the two parties. At the conference, Commissioner Mendoza participated in a moderated panel discussion titled “When Government Gets Digital Right: Building Citizen-Centric Services that Deliver Results.” As the sole representative from the Philippines, he shared insights about the BIR's approach to creating taxpayer-friendly digital solutions and discussed the lessons learned from implementing the Interactive Digital Tax Calendar. His presentation highlighted how the BIR plans to continue developing practical digital innovations that align with the government's overall digital transformation agenda. Looking ahead, Commissioner Mendoza reiterated the commitment of the BIR to support the vision of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for a more modern and responsive government.
