A new study has revealed that biosphere reserves in the Western Amazon have played a critical role in curbing deforestation over the past two decades. Researchers from the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB) found that these protected areas have collectively prevented the loss of more than 7,400 square kilometers (2,900 square miles) of forest compared to scenarios without their protective status. The findings were published in the journal Conservation Science and Practice and represent the first comprehensive assessment of how effectively Amazonian biosphere reserves in Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru deter deforestation. The study analyzed nearly 96,400 square kilometers (37,200 square miles) across seven biosphere reserves using advanced geospatial analysis techniques. Due to the massive volume of data involved, the research required the power of a high-performance supercomputer. Despite rising deforestation rates across the broader Amazon region, the researchers concluded that biosphere reserves are generally more successful at preventing forest loss than similar unprotected areas. One of the key discoveries was that transition areas and buffer zones within biosphere reserves, regions where conservation efforts coexist with agricultural practices, rural settlements, and Indigenous lands, were particularly effective in reducing deforestation. These areas, unlike strictly protected core zones, allowed for human activity while still maintaining ecological integrity. Álvaro Fernández-Llamazares, one of the study’s lead authors, emphasized that this outcome highlights the value of participatory governance models that integrate environmental preservation with community well-being. Biosphere reserves, recognized by UNESCO as “learning places for sustainable development,” operate under a unique management framework that combines protected areas, Indigenous territories, and inhabited regions. They aim to balance biodiversity conservation with the needs of local populations. With 797 such reserves spread across 145 countries and home to over 300 million people, the model offers a scalable approach to addressing global environmental challenges. Among the reserves studied, the Yasuní Biosphere Reserve in Ecuador emerged as the most effective in preventing deforestation. It is credited with averting the loss of approximately 4,745 square kilometers (1,800 square miles) of forest compared to a hypothetical scenario without its protective designation. The reserve, located in a region rich in biodiversity and home to several Indigenous groups, stands as a prime example of how integrated conservation strategies can yield substantial environmental benefits. Amaia Gonzaga-Roa, a researcher at the University of Helsinki and co-author of the study, stressed the importance of combining large-scale geospatial analyses with on-the-ground insights. She noted that understanding the specific challenges faced by local communities is crucial for developing effective conservation strategies. Field-based studies, she argued, provide context that satellite imagery alone cannot capture. The research underscores the significance of involving Indigenous peoples and local communities in conservation planning. By recognizing and supporting their territorial rights, policymakers can create more equitable and sustainable approaches to preserving ecosystems. Scientists and conservationists are now calling for expanded implementation of these models across the Amazon and beyond.
