Bihar dept. to form dedicated force to check illegal mining, transportation of minerals

The Bihar government's Mines and Geology Department plans to recruit 1,000 constables to create a dedicated force aimed at curbing illegal mining, transportation, and storage of minerals. Mines and Geology Minister Pramod Kumar stated that this specialized unit would enhance transparency in mining operations and allow the department to conduct independent raids without relying on local police. Currently, the department depends on local police for such enforcement actions, which adds to the workload of district administrations. The proposed force would be recruited through the appropriate commission, with details on eligibility, training, and operational procedures still under finalization. Kumar also highlighted a significant increase in revenue collections, noting ₹790.23 crore was collected in the first four months of the current financial year compared to ₹590.12 crore in the same period last year. During this time, authorities conducted 16,861 raids, resulting in 278 arrests, seizure of 2,497 vehicles, and recovery of ₹32.64 crore in penalties.
