Report: FIFA chief flew more than twice around the world during World Cup

Infantino attended 43 of the 104 matches held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He used a Gulfstream G650 jet from the charter fleet of Qatar Airways, the World Cup’s sponsor. The aircraft was previously utilized by Infantino in past years. The flight data was analyzed using information from FlightAware and photographs sourced from multiple locations. The flights were tracked over 21 airports, with the longest journey lasting five hours and 44 minutes from Miami to Seattle on June 15. The shortest trip took just 28 minutes from Seattle to Vancouver on July 6. The report noted that Infantino visited each of the 16 stadiums at least once, including five appearances at the Miami World Cup Stadium. The Gulfstream jet made multiple stops, allowing him to attend games and conduct meetings. Some shorter flights were likely transfer flights, during which he was not aboard. Additionally, a detour to Doha before the semifinals was made for a condolence visit following the death of former Emir Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The FIFA has committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions associated with World Cup events and related activities by half by 2030 and achieving climate neutrality by 2040. According to Spiegel, the suspected jet used by Infantino from June 11 to July 16 emitted roughly 813 tons of CO2 during this time frame. The travel patterns of high-profile officials have sparked discussions about the environmental impact of such extensive air travel. While the FIFA has set ambitious sustainability goals, the emissions generated by these trips raise questions about the feasibility of meeting those targets. The organization did not respond to inquiries regarding the issue at the time of the report.
