Robert Koch Institute reports more than 4,300 hot flashes in one week

According to a report by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), over 4,300 people died in Germany due to heat-related causes during the last week of June, with estimates suggesting around 5,100 deaths in total during the first half of the year. This number compares to the peak death toll during the height of the coronavirus pandemic in winter 2020. The majority of victims were elderly individuals over the age of 75, and more women than men died, which is attributed to the higher proportion of older women in the population. Scientists note that accurately determining heat-related deaths is challenging because many factors, such as pre-existing conditions, contribute to mortality. The RKI estimated these figures using data from the Federal Statistical Office, comparing the number of deaths during high temperatures to expected numbers under cooler conditions. Heat-related health risks typically become noticeable when weekly average temperatures reach approximately 20 degrees Celsius, and in the last week of June, temperatures exceeded 26 degrees Celsius, with some regions recording daytime highs above 41 degrees Celsius.
