Bankitalia's debt is at a record high, exceeding 3.2 trillion in June

The Italian public debt has reached a new historical high, surpassing 3.2 trillion euros, according to data released by the Bank of Italy. In June, the debt of public administrations increased by 26.2 billion euros compared to the previous month, reaching a total of 3,207.2 billion euros. This update comes from the Bank of Italy's publication titled Finanza pubblica: fabbisogno e debito. The rise in public debt reflects several factors, including the financial needs of public administrations, which amounted to 13.3 billion euros. Additionally, there was an increase in liquid cash holdings by the Treasury, rising by 9.8 billion euros to reach 61.7 billion euros. Other contributing elements include the effects of discrepancies and premiums related to issuance and redemption, the revaluation of inflation-indexed titles, and changes in exchange rates, which added 3.1 billion euros to the overall figure. Tax revenues recorded in the State budget for June totaled 43.2 billion euros, representing a 1.3 percent decrease (0.6 billion euros) compared to the same month in 2025. For the first six months of 2026, tax revenues have totaled 261.0 billion euros, showing a 1.4 percent increase (3.6 billion euros) over the corresponding period in the previous year. The share of Italian public debt held by foreigners continues to grow. As of June, the portion of debt held by the Bank of Italy decreased slightly to 16.7 percent from 17.2 percent in May. Meanwhile, the proportion held by non-residents rose to 35.9 percent from 35.7 percent in the prior month. The share held by other residents, primarily families and non-financial corporations, declined to 14.5 percent from 14.7 percent in May. Public debt in Italy has been steadily increasing over recent years, driven by government spending, economic challenges, and global financial conditions. The country’s reliance on foreign investors for a large portion of its debt has raised concerns among policymakers and economists. While domestic institutions such as the Bank of Italy hold a smaller share, the growing influence of international creditors underscores the broader implications of Italy’s fiscal policy. The Bank of Italy’s latest figures highlight the ongoing pressures facing the Italian economy. With tax revenues falling short of expectations and public spending continuing to rise, the government faces mounting challenges in managing its finances. Analysts suggest that unless measures are taken to improve revenue collection and reduce unnecessary expenditures, the trajectory of public debt could continue upward. Looking ahead, the Italian government will need to address these issues through a combination of fiscal reforms, structural adjustments, and potential austerity measures. The European Union has also expressed concern over Italy’s debt levels, urging greater fiscal discipline and transparency. As the country moves forward, the balance between maintaining economic growth and ensuring long-term financial stability will remain a central challenge.
