Bangladesh: Hindu groups protest after deity Ram’s picture allegedly desecrated

In Bangladesh, tensions between religious communities escalated following allegations that an image of the Hindu deity Ram was desecrated during recent protests. The incident has sparked widespread concern among Hindu groups, leading to organized demonstrations across multiple districts. According to reports from local media outlets such as The Daily Star and ANI, the desecration occurred during demonstrations against the construction of a new temple dedicated to Ram in the northern district of Gaibandha. Das, the president of the Sri Sri Radha Govinda Temple committee, stated that the decision to halt work was driven by concerns about maintaining social harmony and ensuring the safety of those involved in the project. He further expressed hope that government officials, including Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, would take steps to facilitate the completion of the temple without interference.

Following the alleged desecration of the Ram image, Hindu organizations launched a series of protests. On Friday, a significant torchlight procession was held in Dhaka, where participants chanted slogans such as “Jai Shri Ram” and demanded justice for the incident. The protest was supported by several Hindu groups, including the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, which emphasized the importance of peaceful and democratic demonstrations. The movement expanded beyond Dhaka, with protests taking place in districts such as Barishal, Munshiganj, and Satkhira on Saturday.
