Bandits attack Sokoto community days after troops foiled advance

Suspected bandits attacked the community of Tofa in Sokoto State, Nigeria, killing several residents and abducting others. The attack occurred approximately one week after Nigerian security forces reportedly intercepted armed individuals attempting to advance toward another community in the region. Multiple reports provided varying casualty figures, with Daily Trust stating seven deaths and 27 abductions, while The Punch reported at least 10 deaths and between 38 and 40 abductions. These numbers remain unverified. Livestock were also stolen during the attack. This incident is part of a broader pattern of insecurity in the Rabah Local Government Area, where similar attacks and security operations have occurred since June. Earlier attacks included the killing of four farmers and the abduction of 12 others in Ghandi District in June, followed by a police operation in July that rescued 32 kidnapped individuals. In late August, military forces intercepted armed groups near Ghandi, recovering weapons and ammunition, though there is no confirmation that these groups were linked to the Tofa attack.
