Baba Ramdev's throws surprise demand for educational reforms, threatens to go on protest

Baba Ramdev, a prominent yoga guru and leader of the Cockroach Janta Party, has unexpectedly called for urgent educational reforms and warned of further protests unless changes are made. Speaking at an Independence Day event, Ramdev highlighted widespread dissatisfaction among students in smaller schools, citing a lack of essential facilities such as teachers, electricity, and clean water. He accused authorities of systemic fraud in government job recruitment, claiming that appointments often favor individuals from specific backgrounds rather than merit-based selection. Ramdev’s comments came shortly after the Cockroach Janta Party launched its "School Thik Karo" campaign, focusing on improving conditions in government schools. The party's founder, Abhijeet Dipke, had previously criticized the neglect of public education systems, noting that no political party had effectively addressed the needs of these institutions. During an audit of a government school in his hometown of Santuk Pimpri, Dipke identified several deficiencies, including inadequate water supply, insufficient seating, unclean restrooms, and damaged windows. He emphasized that despite eight decades of independence, many government schools remain underserved. In his address, Ramdev described a chaotic situation in the education sector, with students abandoning smaller schools due to the absence of fundamental resources. He pointed out that while textbooks are available, they are often leaked before examinations, undermining the integrity of assessments. This issue contributed to recent nationwide student-led protests that led to the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Ramdev argued that the current system prioritizes competitive exams over holistic learning, creating an unfair advantage for certain groups. The yoga guru also expressed concerns about the behavior of younger generations, criticizing Gen Z for engaging in practices such as smoking, drinking, and having multiple romantic relationships. While acknowledging that some young people excel academically, he suggested that society must distinguish between positive contributions and harmful behaviors. His remarks were framed as a call to eliminate negative influences and promote virtuous conduct. Ramdev’s threat of further protests underscores growing frustration with bureaucratic inefficiencies and perceived corruption. He claimed that up to 90 to 99 percent of government job interviews are fraudulent, with candidates selected based on personal connections rather than qualifications.
