Australia's electric vehicle (EV) sales have reached record levels, with battery-powered models accounting for nearly a quarter of all new car purchases in July. Sales of these vehicles nearly tripled during the first half of 2026, and early indicators suggest the upward trend will persist. According to combined data from the Electric Vehicle Council and the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, over 108,000 new cars were registered in July, with more than a fifth being battery-powered EVs. Major brands such as Tesla and Polestar saw their monthly deliveries increase more than fourfold compared to the same period last year. BYD, which offers both EVs and hybrids, has emerged as Australia's second-best-selling brand, achieving a year-on-year sales jump of 70.5%. The surge in EV popularity has been driven by several factors. As fuel prices rose, interest in petrol and diesel vehicles declined, while plug-in hybrid sales increased by 157%. This shift reflects a broader movement toward electrification, even among consumers who previously favored traditional internal combustion engines. Despite Australia's historically slower adoption rate of EVs, the current momentum indicates a significant change in consumer behavior. Coles, in collaboration with Evie Networks, plans to install 200-kilowatt fast chargers at up to 30 supermarkets in Victoria and Queensland over the next two years. Ampol has launched its first 400-kilowatt chargers, aiming to build the nation’s leading charging network by 2030. BP is constructing a 24-bay charging hub at Melbourne Airport, bringing its total number of national installations to nearly 300 since 2022. The National Roads and Motorists’ Association is also expanding its highway charging network, having added 35 new stations in 2025 following a A$40 million federal grant. These developments suggest that EV fast chargers could soon be commonplace at everyday locations such as supermarkets and service stations. Despite this rapid expansion, challenges remain in ensuring the reliability and accessibility of the charging infrastructure. Governments frequently allocate funds for new chargers, but much of this investment does not translate into long-term maintenance or operational support. Chargefox, Australia’s largest charging network, operates as a “network of networks,” aggregating chargers from multiple providers, local governments, and private companies. This structure can lead to confusion for drivers, as it becomes unclear which entity is responsible for faulty or malfunctioning equipment. Furthermore, the dominance of a single operator, Chargefox, creates risks of widespread outages, particularly in regions where it holds a majority share of the public charging network, such as Tasmania and Western Australia. In Western Australia, the Royal Automobile Club quietly discontinued its Electric Highway project last year. The initiative had established 16 charging locations along major highways, making it one of the earliest such efforts in the country. Now, responsibility for maintaining these stations has shifted to local councils, many of which lack the expertise or financial capacity to sustain operations. Some councils have removed non-functional chargers entirely, resulting in significant gaps in the charging network. This situation highlights the urgent need for better coordination, ongoing investment, and technical support to ensure that the growing EV population can access reliable charging options. While other nations are also working to expand their public charging networks, Australia faces unique challenges due to its geographic size and varying regional priorities. The recent acceleration in EV adoption signals a promising future for sustainable transportation, but the success of this transition depends on addressing the current shortcomings in infrastructure management and long-term planning. As the market continues to evolve, stakeholders must work together to ensure that the charging network keeps pace with the increasing number of EVs on the road.
