Massive attack by Ukrainian drones on Moscow region: strategic sites targeted

More than 400 Ukrainian drones struck Moscow region overnight into Monday, targeting strategic infrastructure and causing damage to industrial facilities and civilian areas, according to Russian officials. The attack occurred in the early hours of July 21, with reports indicating that 10 people were injured, including three Chinese citizens who required hospitalization. A child aged 11 was among the wounded. The assault reportedly targeted key logistics centers, oil depots, and other critical infrastructure. According to Moscow’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, 85 of the drones were destroyed near the city's outskirts, while others were neutralized farther away. The attack caused fires and structural damage in several locations, including the industrial complex known as Ioujnye Vrata, located approximately 30 kilometers south of Moscow near the city of Domodedovo. This facility spans over 600,000 square meters and includes storage areas, according to local authorities. Governor Andrei Vorobiev confirmed the injuries and noted that private residences and civil infrastructure had been damaged due to debris falling from the drones. He mentioned that the affected cities included Domodedovo, Podolsk, and Odintsovo, all of which have suffered varying degrees of destruction. The incident has prompted an investigation by Russia’s Investigative Committee, which labeled the attack a “terrorist act” following the “massive strike by Ukrainian forces in the Moscow region.” The timing of this attack comes amid heightened tensions, as Kyiv was hit earlier in the week by one of the largest ballistic missile strikes since the war began, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. That attack resulted in one death and 16 injuries. Earlier in the week, on Saturday night, Ukrainian drones attacked two logistics centers belonging to the Russian e-commerce giant Wildberries, resulting in at least eight fatalities. These incidents highlight the escalating intensity of attacks from both sides along the conflict zone, leading to increasing casualties among civilians. The recent drone attack on Moscow region follows a pattern of intensified aerial assaults by both Ukraine and Russia. Over four years after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the frequency and scale of such attacks have increased significantly, contributing to rising civilian casualties and widespread disruption of daily life in affected regions.
