Flights canceled as Etna continues to spew ash

The largest airport in Sicily, Catania International Airport, remains closed due to ongoing volcanic activity at Mount Etna. Numerous flights have been canceled or diverted as a result of dense ash clouds generated by the volcano. Visitors continue to flock to the area, with two hikers recently rescued after becoming lost during their attempt to view the glowing lava flows. Mount Etna continues to display active lava flows descending its slopes, while a thick ash cloud has disrupted air travel. The Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reports that volcanic activity persists at openings located approximately 2,750 meters and 2,360 meters above sea level. The farthest advancing lava flow remains well supplied with magma, reaching heights of around 1,370 meters. Simultaneously, intense explosive activity continues at the Voragine crater, leading to substantial amounts of volcanic ash being ejected primarily onto the southern side of the mountain. This ash has been observed in several nearby settlements and in Catania itself. The eruption has significantly impacted flight operations. At Catania’s international airport “Vincenzo Bellini,” temporary closures occurred due to the ash cloud, resulting in a near halt to normal operations. Many flights were either canceled or rerouted, causing delays and changes to travelers' schedules. Before resuming regular operations, the runway and surrounding areas must be cleared of volcanic ash. Aircraft stationed on the apron received protective coverings to prevent contamination of engines. Despite the disruption to air travel, Mount Etna has become a major attraction for visitors. Especially at night, groups of tourists and nature enthusiasts make their way to observation points to witness the glowing lava flows. Authorities and rescue services have issued warnings against unprepared excursions into the rugged terrain. A young couple from the province of Catania was recently rescued after becoming disoriented on their return journey from an observation point. They had lost track of the marked path back to their starting point and eventually called for help via emergency numbers. They were safely retrieved. Rescue personnel indicate such incidents are not uncommon given the current number of visitors attempting to observe the dramatic eruption up close. Hundreds of people try to view the spectacle from as close as possible, often under challenging conditions. However, not all individuals are adequately equipped or familiar with the terrain and potential dangers associated with the volcano.
