AtHeart revisits Roo'Ra's 30-year-old summer hit '3!4!'

AtHeart has launched its latest project, "Time Travel Project," with the release of a remake of Roo'Ra’s 1996 summer hit "3!4!". The rookie girl group, composed of members averaging 18 years old, chose to revisit a song that predates their existence by nearly three decades. The remake, titled "3!4!", marks a deliberate effort to connect past and present, blending nostalgia with contemporary flair. The single was unveiled during a press showcase in Seoul on Wednesday, where the group shared insights into their creative process and motivations behind the project. The decision to revive "3!4!" came after careful consideration. For AtHeart, the song represented more than just a nostalgic reference, it symbolized a bridge between eras. Members expressed admiration for the original track, which was a defining hit for coed group Roo'Ra. The song, known for its energetic rhythm and catchy lyrics, became synonymous with the vibrant pop culture of the mid-1990s. Its resurgence through AtHeart reflects a broader trend in K-pop where older hits are reimagined by newer artists, often with a fresh interpretation tailored to modern audiences. Lee Hyun-do, the original songwriter of "3!4!", contributed to the arrangement of AtHeart’s version. This collaboration added a layer of authenticity to the remake, ensuring that the essence of the original remained intact while allowing room for innovation. Members emphasized the importance of studying the original performance, particularly those of Roo'Ra member Chae Rina, whom some fans consider a pioneer of the genre. Nahyun, one of the group's members, recalled how her mother, a devoted fan of Chae Rina, urged her to analyze the singer's style and techniques. The remake was not merely a replication of the past. AtHeart aimed to infuse the song with their own identity. "Because '3!4!' is such a famous song, I felt the pressure, but we tried very hard to incorporate our own refreshing vibe," said Michi. The group recognized the challenges posed by the song’s historical significance and the expectations that came with it. They worked diligently to ensure that their version would resonate with both younger listeners and those familiar with the original. Differences in group structure also influenced the remake. With a smaller lineup and distinct vocal arrangements, AtHeart found ways to highlight their individual strengths. "There is a difference in our group size and composition compared to the original Roo'Ra, which brings a big change in vocals. We maximized our lovely charm in our version of '3!4!' through diverse vocal combinations," explained Nahyun. This approach allowed the group to create a sound that feels both familiar and new. The project extended beyond the music itself. A companion drama titled "3+4!" was produced, featuring a time-travel concept that transported the members between 2026 and 1996. This visual element deepened the connection between the past and present, offering fans a glimpse into the cultural context of the original song. The production also included immersive experiences, such as exposure to vintage technology. Nahyun noted that she had never seen a pager before, highlighting the contrast between the two eras. Roo'Ra member Chae Rina offered support for the remake, expressing confidence in AtHeart’s ability to succeed. "We met Chae Rina and told her we were remaking '3!4!',” said Seohyeon. “She congratulated us and warmly cheered us on, saying, 'You must hit No. 1 on the music charts.'" Her endorsement underscored the enduring legacy of the original song and the respect it continues to command within the industry.
