At least 7 killed in India after hydropower project tunnel collapses

At least seven workers died when a tunnel under construction at a hydropower project in India's northern state of Uttarakhand collapsed, according to officials. The incident occurred at the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti hydroelectric project in the Chamoli district, where a sudden influx of water and debris into the tunnel led to the tragedy. Rescue operations began shortly after the collapse, which took place late on Thursday night. The tunnel, part of a larger hydropower initiative, had been under construction for several months. A total of 22 workers were present inside the tunnel at the time of the collapse. Of these, 12 were successfully rescued alive, while three remain unaccounted for. The chief minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, confirmed the casualties during a press briefing. He described the situation as extremely challenging due to the ongoing efforts to locate the missing individuals. Emergency response teams, including members of the national and state Disaster Response Forces, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, and local fire services, have been deployed to the site. These teams face considerable difficulties as they navigate through rising water levels and accumulating debris within the tunnel. According to Amrit Lal Meena, commander of the National Disaster Response Force team, the conditions worsened rapidly upon their arrival. “When our team reached the site and started the operation, there was a lot of water inside the tunnel and water was also seeping from the sides. Since then, the water level has increased considerably,” he stated. India has long struggled with construction-related fatalities, particularly in regions characterized by complex geology and harsh weather conditions. Rapid infrastructure development, often driven by government initiatives aimed at boosting economic growth, frequently encounters challenges such as inadequate safety protocols and insufficient oversight.
