Ariel Winter reflects on reprising her iconic role in 'Sofia the First: Royal Magic'

Ariel Winter has returned to the voice of Sofia the First in the new spin-off series Sofia the First: Royal Magic, marking a nostalgic yet exciting chapter for fans of the long-running Disney franchise. Premiering on Disney Jr. and available on Disney+, the series follows Sofia as she begins her studies at the Charmswell School for Royal Magic, a prestigious institution where she discovers she is the most powerful magical princess in the realm. This latest installment continues the legacy of the original Sofia the First series, which debuted in 2012 and became one of Disney’s most popular preschool programs. Winter, who voiced Sofia throughout the original series, described stepping back into the role as both a privilege and a personal milestone. “It feels like a homecoming,” she said. “I was so excited to see everyone again. We always had such a great relationship, and I was very excited to come back as an adult and see what that's like.” The experience of returning to the character has been deeply reflective for Winter, who recalls her early days as a child auditioning for the role. “I remember when I first auditioned for the show, I was like, ‘Wow, this would be such a dream.’ I don’t think I ever realized that I would be doing this show like 14 years later. It’s such an honor,” she shared. Though Winter has matured significantly since her time on the show, Sofia remains a young princess in training, albeit in a new environment. “While Sofia has grown a little bit, she's still around the same age. She's just going to a new school and experiencing new things,” Winter explained. For her part, Winter has undergone a considerable transformation over the past decade, having lived through many changes in her personal and professional life. “I’ve aged about 10 years, so I had a whole new life change. I definitely think that we all change and grow, and new circumstances mean growth.” As Sofia navigates the challenges of mastering her newfound magical abilities, the series introduces a fresh cast of characters, each bringing unique personalities and cultural backgrounds to the story. “The friendships are definitely different. There’s new characters with tons of different personality traits that are different from her old friends, which is beautiful,” Winter noted. She expressed enthusiasm for the dynamic interactions among the new characters, describing their culture as vibrant and their musical contributions as exceptional. Despite the increased focus on magic and adventure, Winter emphasized that Sofia’s core values remain unchanged. “What’s important to know about Sofia is that at her core she is just such a kind and empathetic person,” she said. “She always wants to see the good in people and make the best out of a situation. While something might be tough or stressful, she’s always going to want to try and find the positive. I loved playing a character like that because that good spirit is something I love to be able to put out there.” The creative team behind Royal Magic aimed to blend entertainment with meaningful messages, ensuring that the series appeals to both children and adults. Creator and executive producer Craig Gerber, who also worked on the original series, sought to craft a show that combines fun and fantasy with real-life lessons. “I watched a lot of shows with my kids when they were younger, and I’ve always wanted to create a show that adult audiences could enjoy while still being educational for children,” Gerber stated. The series promises to deliver a mix of humor, heart, and enchantment, continuing the tradition of inspiring young viewers through storytelling.
