Argentina's national football federation has announced its intention to appeal against sanctions imposed by FIFA following the controversial final match against Spain at the 2023 Men’s World Cup. The decision comes after FIFA handed out disciplinary measures to several players, including a suspension and fines, over alleged unsportsmanlike conduct during the game held in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes was involved in a scuffle with Spanish player Gavi after he tackled goalkeeper Eric García, leading to a heated exchange. Leandro Paredes received the most severe sanction, being banned from playing for ten matches and fined $90,000 (approximately €77,000). Thiago Almada, also from Argentina, and Spanish player Gavi were each banned from one international match and fined $30,000 (around €25,500). The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has criticized these sanctions as excessive, stating they believe the punishments are too harsh given the circumstances.
