Referees, Orsato is the new designator

Daniele Orsato has been appointed as the new head referee for Serie A and B in Italian football, marking a significant shift in leadership within the refereeing sector. The decision was made by Domenico Messina, who recently took on the role of technical director of the refereeing department. Orsato, a 50-year-old Venetian from Schio, previously served as a referee in Lega Pro and has demonstrated promise in his role as a designator. He will lead the refereeing team for the next two years, succeeding Gianluca Rocchi. His appointment comes amid a period of uncertainty following ongoing legal investigations and internal conflicts within the Italian Football Referees Association (AIA). Orsato brings extensive experience to his new role, having officiated over 290 matches in Serie A and participated in major European competitions such as the UEFA Champions League and the European Championship. Known for his strong personality and respect among even the most critical coaches, including José Mourinho, he is seen as someone capable of introducing a fresh approach to the management of referees. His tenure follows a turbulent period marked by legal scrutiny involving prosecutor Ascione, which has since shifted to assistant prosecutor Ielo, and internal disputes that led to the resignation of AIA president Antonio Zappi. The official announcement was made by FIGC president Giovanni Malagò, who emphasized the absolute independence of the refereeing sector. Orsato expressed his commitment to improving the performance of top referees while also nurturing the growth of younger officials. This marks a crucial challenge for him, especially after a season marred by controversy, notably the incident involving players Kalulu and Bastoni. Notably, Daniele Doveri, who was described as unwelcome by Inter during the Ascione investigation, has been confirmed as the number one referee in active service and will remain on the field for another season. The refereeing staff under Orsato's leadership will include Carboni and Giallatini, both of whom have been loyal collaborators. In Serie C, the new head referee is Alessandro Ayroldi, while Enrico Dondarini will oversee Serie D. Elections for the new leadership of the AIA are scheduled between mid-September and early October, currently managed by vice-president Francesco Massini. The transition in leadership aims to restore stability and confidence in the refereeing community, which has faced considerable challenges in recent months. With Orsato's appointment, there is hope for a more structured and independent approach to managing referees, ensuring fair play and maintaining the integrity of the game.
