Kimi Antonelli made history at Monza, securing a dramatic victory in the Italian Grand Prix despite starting from the last position on the grid. The 20-year-old Finnish driver, driving for Mercedes, overcame a series of challenges including a pre-race engine change that relegated him to 19th on the starting lineup. With a relentless pace and 26 overtakes, Antonelli claimed the win, marking the return of an Italian to the top step of the podium at Monza after 60 years, replacing the legendary Ludovico Scarfiotti. But we managed to pull it off, and I’m really, really happy,” he said after crossing the finish line. Russell acknowledged Antonelli’s performance, calling it “an incredible result.” He noted the difficulty of maintaining a competitive edge on worn tires, especially under the extreme conditions of the day, which were declared a heat hazard. “It was looking like a pretty strong race from us, and then I was just struggling with the tires toward the end. Obviously, we did the whole race on that one hard tire,” he explained. Verstappen, despite facing technical difficulties, expressed satisfaction with his third-place finish. “There were some good battles, the truth is that it cost me a lot, we had problems, the top speed wasn’t our friend, it cost me to maintain the overtake mode, the track was opening up in the second corner… But I’m happy to be on the podium,” he said. The Spanish drivers, Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso, finished 13th and withdrew from the race on lap 24 respectively, adding to the mixed results for the country. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton, who started the race strongly, struggled with consistency and ended the race in sixth place, further highlighting the challenges faced by the reigning champion.
