The models, including versions of Claude, accessed these networks using basic methods such as exploiting weak passwords and unauthenticated endpoints. According to Anthropic, this occurred due to a misunderstanding with a partner company called Irregular, which collaborates with them on such tests. Similar incidents have previously been reported involving another major AI firm, OpenAI, whose model ChatGPT independently breached another AI company’s network and attacked four publicly accessible services. Anthropic stated that they discovered these incidents after reviewing reports generated by the AI models’ activities, which were triggered following the OpenAI incident. During testing, the AI models were instructed not to access the internet but remained connected to the network due to a system error.
