Andy Burnham, the newly elected UK prime minister, will be joined in Downing Street by his wife, Marie-France van Heel, whose career in marketing has spanned more than two decades. Born in the Netherlands, Ms van Heel met Mr Burnham while they were both students at Cambridge University’s Fitzwilliam College in 1988. Their relationship began over a shared appreciation for The Smiths, and they remained together for nearly 35 years before marrying in 2000. The couple has three children, Jimmy, Rosie, and Annie, and a pet bichon frise named Axel. They are described as a tightly knit family. Their early days at university saw them bond through late-night conversations and shared interests. Mr Burnham, who was then trying to impress the new first-year students, found himself drawn to Ms van Heel because of her love for The Smiths. A fellow student, John Mullan, remembered her as “the coolest girl in the college”, even though she was Dutch. When Mr Burnham became her official boyfriend, some of his classmates were surprised, believing she had chosen him. “There was some surprise and a feeling that he had scooped the pools,” Mullan recalled. Ms van Heel’s career in marketing began shortly after their marriage. She worked at BSkyB before founding her own firm, MVH Marketing. Later, she became chief strategy officer at Heavenly, a London-based agency that handled campaigns for major brands such as HSBC, England Rugby, and the BBC. Currently, she serves as chief marketing officer at Iduna Infrastructure, which operates a substantial portion of Manchester’s electric vehicle charging network. Her work has brought her into contact with key figures in the energy sector, including those involved in the UK’s push for net-zero emissions. Despite her professional success, Ms van Heel has largely kept a low profile in public life. While she occasionally made appearances alongside Mr Burnham, particularly during his political career, she rarely stepped forward as a public figure. This approach continued even after Mr Burnham became an MP in 2001. Friends describe her as “driven and independent-minded,” emphasizing that she prefers to focus on her career rather than take on a traditional role as a political spouse. During Mr Burnham’s 2015 failed bid for Labour leadership, she appeared in a video where she humorously reflected on their early days together, joking about being “beguiled by the long hair, the good looks, and the monobrow.” Ms van Heel’s personal life has also included moments of public attention. In 1992, she participated in the ITV show Blind Date, hosted by Cilla Black. She chose “Will from Surrey” as her date, but the encounter ended awkwardly. The man, later identified as Will Harris, became a marketing director for the Conservative Party. Ms van Heel reportedly threw a cushion at her TV date, who called her a “cold fish.” The incident led to years of teasing, with Mr Burnham recalling watching the episode from behind the sofa. Despite this, the couple remained together, eventually marrying in 2000. As Mr Burnham prepares to assume the role of prime minister, Ms van Heel’s visibility in public life remains uncertain. While she has been seen supporting him at political events, such as the TUC’s headquarters in London, she has not yet indicated whether she plans to play a prominent role in the government.
