Andrew Garfield: "Why couldn't Spider-Man have been gay?"

Andrew Garfield has reignited discussions about the sexuality of Peter Parker, the character he portrayed in three major films. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor questioned why Spider-Man couldn’t be gay or bisexual, challenging the notion that his romantic storyline must involve a woman. The 43-year-old actor expressed his belief that the character’s appeal lies in its universality. “Everyone can imagine themselves in that costume,” he said. That’s why he’s so universally loved, one of the most beloved figures in fiction history, because you don’t see skin color, you don’t see gender, you don’t see sexuality. Everyone can imagine themselves in that costume,” Garfield explained. He further noted that the possibility of identifying with the character is one of the reasons Spider-Man has remained popular for decades. “It’s one of the reasons he’s been so beloved for so long,” he added. Garfield believes that a world where everyone is accepted and respected would align well with the values of the Spider-Man universe. This isn’t the first time Garfield has raised questions about the traditional love story involving Peter Parker. In 2013, he suggested that the character’s romantic arc could take a different turn. At that time, he discussed the idea of making Mary Jane Watson, one of Peter’s most famous loves, a man. “I was partly joking, but I was serious about MJ,” he recalled. “What if MJ is a guy? Why shouldn’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? That’s not revolutionary at all,” he said. Garfield even proposed who might play the male version of MJ, suggesting Michael B. Jordan. “I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since the series ‘Get Out.’ He’s so charismatic and talented. If we had a bisexual relationship, that would be even better,” he remarked.
