From 37 samples collected across seven sites, researchers determined that 13 were green sea turtles, 10 were loggerheads, and two were hawksbills. Green turtles were the most frequently hunted, despite their current relatively stable population. Loggerheads, though less numerous today, were among the most commonly found in the archaeological record. Hawksbills, although widespread across the region, were rarely targeted. This discrepancy suggests that factors beyond mere availability influenced hunting decisions. Christine Conlan, a Ph.D. candidate in SFU’s Department of Archaeology and lead researcher, explained that comparing historical data with modern conservation strategies requires specificity. “When you’re trying to compare archaeological data to conservation data, if it’s really broad, the application isn’t there,” she said. “What’s impacting a hawksbill sea turtle versus a green sea turtle is going to be really different.” She emphasized that understanding the cultural context behind these choices is crucial for developing effective conservation policies. The reasons for targeting certain species appear to be multifaceted. Green turtles were likely preferred due to their abundance and favorable taste, according to Conlan. Historical records and oral traditions document a preference for their meat, which may have contributed to their frequent harvesting. In contrast, loggerhead turtles were historically attracted to the region due to the presence of queen conch, a shellfish that has since declined significantly. As conch populations have dwindled, so too has the likelihood of loggerhead encounters, raising questions about the ecological interdependencies between species. Conlan noted that the decline of queen conch may have had indirect effects on turtle populations. “You see conch shells consistently throughout archaeological sites and over time you see them get smaller and smaller, which could indicate overexploitation,” she said. If ongoing conch restoration initiatives succeed, they could potentially encourage greater loggerhead activity, which in turn might benefit conch recovery. This connection underscores the complexity of marine ecosystems and the need for integrated management approaches. Establishing ancient baselines for modern conservation is central to the research. By examining how turtle populations responded to historical pressures, such as overharvesting, habitat loss, and shifting environmental conditions, scientists hope to create more accurate models for predicting and mitigating current threats. Conlan described this process as essential for understanding what these ecosystems once resembled before industrialization, pollution, and climate change took hold. “Baselines can help us establish what these ecosystems looked like prior to heavy industrialization,” she said. “To see what these states were and to establish environmental parameters that can support species survival under modern conditions.” Tourism and coastal development continue to shape the region’s ecological landscape, adding layers of complexity to conservation challenges. Researchers are now exploring how traditional knowledge systems, combined with scientific methods, can offer sustainable solutions for protecting both turtles and the broader marine environment. As the work continues, the lessons from the past may prove invaluable in shaping a more resilient future for the southern Caribbean’s biodiversity.
