Ancient diamond preserves evidence of water-bearing mineral deep in Earth's mantle

Brazilian researchers discovered that goethite, a mineral associated with soil and ocean floors, can survive extreme pressures and temperatures deep within the Earth's mantle, as evidenced by a 3-millimeter-long diamond containing microscopic goethite inclusions. This finding suggests that goethite could transport water from the Earth's crust to the lower mantle. Previous studies had shown water from the crust can reach the upper mantle, but this research provides direct evidence of water movement deeper into the planet. The study, conducted using the Sirius particle accelerator in Brazil, was based on geologist Carolina Camarda’s master’s thesis and supported by funding from CAPES and FAPESP. The diamonds used in the study were sourced from a gold miners’ cooperative in Mato Grosso, where they formed at depths exceeding 300 km.
