An American destroyer spent four days without electricity in the South China Sea 300 sailors without water and toilets

A U.S. destroyer has spent four days without power in the South China Sea, leaving approximately 300 sailors stranded on deck with no clean water, meals, functioning restrooms, or climate control systems. The incident occurred aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Benfold (DDG-65), part of the Arleigh Burke-class fleet, during routine operations in the Indo-Pacific region on July 24, 2026. According to the U.S. Navy, the ship suffered a severe failure in its generators, resulting in a complete loss of electrical power. The situation worsened due to high temperatures in the area, making the conditions on deck even more unbearable. The breakdown left the crew without access to drinking water, hot meals, working facilities, and climate control equipment. Despite these challenges, no injuries were reported, according to Rear Admiral Matthew Comer, commander of the Seventh Fleet. He praised the crew’s resilience, professionalism, and steadfastness under difficult circumstances. The cause of the malfunction is still under investigation. The ship required external assistance after the outage, with the amphibious assault ship USS Robert Smalls providing food supplies and other vessels from the group offering support. The Benfold was eventually towed by harbor tugboats to Subic Bay on the Philippines, arriving on July 28. Following arrival, technical experts from the Ship Repair Facility and Japan Regional Maintenance Center began repairs. Crew members stayed off the ship starting on July 29 and were housed and fed elsewhere. Electrical power was restored on July 30, and all repairs were completed by August 7. On August 8, the ship departed Subic Bay with fully operational engineering, combat, and support systems. It then proceeded to Yokosuka, Japan, where it is currently berthed. The Benfold did not join the strike group led by the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, which was heading toward the Middle East. The incident comes amid growing public scrutiny of living conditions aboard U.S. military ships, particularly concerning the ability of the navy to sustain long deployments. The USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), an aircraft carrier deployed in the Middle East since November 2025, has been continuously at sea for over 250 days, surpassing the standard 200-day limit without port visits. Sailors have reported shortages of food, hygiene items, and mental health resources, with video footage circulating online showing moldy showers, broken plumbing, and unsanitary bathrooms. These images have sparked calls for an investigation into the conditions aboard the Lincoln. This is not the first such incident this year. In April 2026, the destroyer USS Higgins lost electrical power and propulsion for several hours in the Indo-Pacific due to a fault in its electrical system. Again, no injuries were reported. Analysts suggest such failures could result from delayed maintenance, heavy usage of the fleet, and extended deployments. The USS Benfold, which is around 30 years old and has been in service since 1996, underwent extensive repairs following the incident. Its return to operational status highlights concerns about the readiness of the U.S. Navy in the Asia-Pacific region, where the United States seeks to maintain deterrence against China while simultaneously deploying forces to the Middle East in response to tensions with Iran.
