Alliance against Chinese dominance: US and partners forge 6G security pact

The United States has joined more than 20 partner nations in forming a global alliance aimed at advancing secure sixth-generation (6G) mobile networks. The coalition includes countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Japan, Australia, South Korea, Canada, Finland, and Sweden. This initiative was launched with a call to action titled “Leadership and Security in 6G,” emphasizing the need for coordinated international efforts in developing future telecommunications infrastructure. The alliance seeks to establish binding security architectures, secure supply chains, and define technological standards well before commercial 6G networks are expected to replace current 5G infrastructures during the 2030s. The move comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions over 5G technology, which have long served as a battleground between the U.S. and China. Concerns over national security led the U.S. to strongly warn against using components from Chinese telecom companies like Huawei and ZTE, urging allies to remove these firms from critical infrastructure. In the U.S., billions in funding were allocated to remove existing network equipment from rural areas, a situation the new 6G pact aims to prevent. By taking this proactive approach, the U.S. hopes to counter China’s global ambitions in telecommunications. Close collaboration with technologically advanced partners is seen as crucial to enforcing unified international standards before rival actors can establish their dominance. The urgency of forming this alliance is underscored by upcoming international telecommunications policy agendas, including the World Radiocommunication Conference scheduled for 2027 in Shanghai. At this conference, nations will negotiate essential frequency spectrums and foundational technical frameworks. According to Arielle Roth, head of the U.S.-led National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), 6G represents a fundamental shift from 5G, requiring a completely new strategy. Roth emphasized that 6G would serve not just as the basis for traditional smartphones but also as the backbone for emerging key technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, connected industrial production, and military applications. Given the deep integration of 6G infrastructure into core societal functions, network security becomes directly linked to national sovereignty. In their joint declaration, signatory states committed to creating an open, interoperable, resource-efficient, and AI-driven global communication system. They acknowledged that globally interconnected systems inherently create dependencies and cyber risks, prompting the initiative to implement a specific timeline. Within the first month, all participating governments aim to identify specialized contacts and coordinating authorities while exchanging contact lists. Concurrently, they plan to conduct assessments of relevant industry and academic stakeholders. Over the following quarter, extensive consultations with the private sector are planned to identify obstacles to achieving a leading role in global 6G development. The roadmap for future infrastructure outlines plans for the partners to develop strategies for resilient long-term supply chains within six months. These strategies will integrate 6G security considerations into national strategic planning. Following this, the alliance intends to initiate collaborative research projects focused on securing 6G technologies and establishing common principles for global governance. By the end of the year, the group expects to finalize a comprehensive framework outlining shared goals and mechanisms for cooperation. The formation of this alliance reflects a broader effort to ensure that future communications technology aligns with democratic values and security priorities. As the race for technological leadership intensifies, the U.S. and its allies are positioning themselves to shape the next era of global connectivity through early coordination and strategic foresight.
