The Argentine health regulator, the National Administration of Drugs, Foods and Medical Technology (ANMAT), has issued a warning regarding the illegal sale of an experimental weight-loss drug called Retatrutide. The agency alerted the public after detecting unauthorized sales of the substance through social media platforms, websites, online marketplaces and WhatsApp groups. These postings claimed that products containing Retatrutide could aid in weight loss, regulate calorie intake and improve metabolic function. However, ANMAT clarified that the drug is still in clinical trial phase and lacks necessary approvals for widespread use. It emphasized that its safety and effectiveness have not been proven outside controlled studies. The alert followed reports of illicit distribution of the drug, which is marketed as an injectable solution. According to ANMAT, the substances being sold under the name Retatrutide are presented as “peptides” and come in forms meant to be reconstituted and injected. These claims were made despite the absence of regulatory approval for such uses. The agency warned that the efficacy and safety of the product remain unverified, and crucial information about manufacturers and production conditions is unknown. This lack of transparency raises serious concerns over the quality and sterility of these products, particularly since they are intended for injection, which poses additional risks. She described using a substance she believed to be Retatrutide, which led to a range of adverse effects including dizziness, nausea, tremors, fever, sleepiness and confusion. Her family took her to a healthcare facility, though she remained unaware of the exact nature of the substance she had used. This incident highlights the real-world consequences of consuming unapproved drugs, even when they appear to offer potential benefits. Retatrutide is currently under investigation for its use in patients with type 2 diabetes who struggle to manage blood sugar levels. While it has not yet received authorization for weight-loss purposes, it has gained attention online, often misrepresented as a miracle cure. Online promotions claim it enhances satiety, modifies insulin sensitivity and increases energy expenditure.
