Alaska Senate Candidates Attempt to Link Each Other to Epstein

Alaska's competitive Senate race has taken a controversial turn as Democratic candidate Mary Peltola and Republican incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan attempt to connect each other to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In a recent advertisement, Peltola accuses Sullivan of being responsible for keeping the Epstein-related files confidential by casting what she describes as the "deciding vote." However, Sullivan had previously supported legislation aimed at making these records public, according to reports. The Peltola ad further attempts to associate Sullivan with Epstein through campaign donations from individuals linked to Epstein. These donors, however, are not alleged to have committed any crimes related to Epstein. Additionally, the ad criticizes Sullivan for accepting funds from a man accused of sex trafficking, though the donations occurred prior to the accusations becoming public knowledge. Following the man's arrest, the Sullivan campaign reportedly redirected those contributions to a local charity. On August 10, the Sullivan campaign issued a press release referencing a conservative media outlet's claim that Peltola had received over $140,000 in campaign contributions from individuals associated with Epstein. Yet, none of these individuals have faced criminal charges, and their connections to Epstein appear tenuous at best. Linking political adversaries to Epstein has become a common strategy among candidates across both major parties this election cycle. Peltola, who previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives, is currently vying for Sullivan's Senate seat. A jungle primary governed by Alaska's ranked-choice voting system will take place on August 18, with the top four finishers advancing to the November general election. This race is considered a toss-up by the Cook Political Report. The Peltola ad specifically highlights Sullivan's September 10 vote to reject an amendment proposed by Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer to the National Defense Authorization Act. This amendment aimed to require the attorney general to make all unclassified records related to Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell accessible to the public. Despite expressing support for transparency regarding Epstein's activities during the 2024 presidential campaign, Sullivan's actions in September suggest a different stance. During the summer of 2025, former President Donald Trump appeared to shift his position on the Epstein files, stating they were "pretty boring stuff" and questioning the continued public interest in the case. His comments coincided with efforts by the Trump administration to limit discussions around the Epstein investigation. Amanda Coyne, a spokesperson for Sullivan, later stated that President Trump had instructed the Department of Justice and Attorney General Pam Bondi to release grand jury transcripts concerning Epstein's prosecution. Sullivan expressed belief that the DOJ should disclose as much information as possible about Epstein's crimes while safeguarding victims' identities. Sullivan's vote in September effectively blocked Schumer's amendment from progressing to debate, with the final tally showing a narrow majority of 51-49 against the motion. At the time, Sullivan released a statement affirming his commitment to transparency regarding Epstein's crimes, emphasizing the need to protect victims' privacy. As the Alaska Senate race intensifies, both candidates continue to leverage allegations and counter-allegations involving Epstein to sway voter sentiment. With the upcoming jungle primary looming, the focus remains on how each candidate will address these contentious issues in the lead-up to the general election.
